About six months ago, London-based dental hygienist-therapist Theodora Little spoke openly about an issue that many dental clinics are facing right now: how are dental hygienists able to undertake essential care and thorough oral hygiene instructions in 20- to 30-minute appointments? In an interview at the BDIA Dental Showcase in London in the UK this year, Theodora introduced to a new prevention concept, individual training of oral prophylaxis, that will empower patients to maintain their oral health and thereby ultimately prevent dental disease.

Catherine Schubert is one of the pioneers of the iTOP (individually trained oral prophylaxis) educational programme. With decades of experience as a dental hygienist, she runs iTOP courses across the globe. In delivering the training, she continuously develops her own skills, explains the latest findings and demonstrates how older patients in particular can maintain and improve their oral health. The elderly can be vulnerable, since they are often reliant on their carers for their dental care routine. In this interview, Dental Tribune spoke with her about her first and most recent experiences with iTOP.
