COLOGNE, Germany: The 39th International Dental Show (IDS) will take place next year from 9 to 13 March in Cologne. The organisers said that the event will mark the beginning of doing business in a new world in which a greater awareness of personal health will reign and where the value of dentistry and oral health will be re-evaluated by the world’s economies.
The announcement came from organisers Mark Stephen Pace, chairman of the board of the Association of the German Dental Industry (VDDI), and Oliver Frese, chief operating officer of Koelnmesse. It was welcomed by the international dental industry, which has had its 2020 calendar of events wiped clean by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
IDS is the world’s leading dental trade fair, and Pace and Frese stressed the importance that exposition events will have in shaping the dental industry in the post-COVID-19 era. “Production, logistics, distribution and communication will change; the networking of stakeholders, reactivating economic relationships and establishing new business will be more important than ever before. It is critical that all market participants actively prepare for this now,” they asserted.
“We are highly confident that, together, we can once again make IDS a successful event”

Pace and Frese said that they were confident about hosting a successful event in 2021 and that the health of all partners and guests would be the organisers’ highest priority. “We are therefore working together with all international, national and regional organisations and bodies tasked with setting, monitoring and maintaining health standards […] We thank you for the trust you have placed in us during these difficult times. We are highly confident that, together, we can once again make IDS a successful event,” they explained.
Dental companies have not let the pandemic stop them from registering for the event. Pace and Frese said that registrations were coming in daily and that this was a positive affirmation of the resilience and optimism of the dental industry.
IDS takes place biennially in the vibrant western German city of Cologne and is organised by the VDDI’s business enterprise, the Society for the Advancement of the Dental Industry (GFDI), and staged by Koelnmesse.
IDS in 2019 had more than 2,300 exhibitors over 170,000 m2 of exhibition space, and 160,000 visitors travelled from 166 countries to attend the event.
